CUTTING CROWN MOLDINGS WITH DENTIL

Crown moldings are beautiful architectural pieces that are usually found in many homes. One of crown moldings how to’s is to complement them with dentil moldings. Dentil moldings are usually purchased separately from crown moldings however they are sometimes attached directly to crown moldings and can be purchased as one piece. Whichever way, cutting crown moldings with dentil is a challenging task even for the most seasoned carpenter. Here are some tips on how to cut crown moldings with dentils the easy way;

1. Measure the wall where you want to install your crown moldings. Make the area from end to end and in between with pencil and using a stud finder, mark the nails studs to have a solid base of your crown moldings.

2. When purchasing the moldings, don’t forget to buy extra few pieces as allowance for error. Bear in mind that crown moldings are difficult to cut and install because of its tilted shape so allotting a few extra pieces in case of error is a very practical idea.

3. Cut the crown moldings using a miter saw. For inside cuts, place the molding face up. Tilt the miter saw at a 45 degree angle and secure the molding tightly in the miter fence. Slowly make the cut. Do the opposite when cutting the outside corners.

4. Make sure that the dentil design and profile of the crown molding looks continuous when making the cut. This might result to wastage but this is important in achieving a seamless look where the walls meet the ceilings in your room.
